Emails & Formletters - In order to send emails with AuctionSage you will need a POP/SMTP email account and a MAPI compatible email client. The only other option is to use the eBay Mail system but that limits you to 10 emails per day maximum and, regretfully, eBay inserts some messages in the email ahead of your actual message.

To setup your email preference in AuctionSage go to the File Menu and Select Setup - Email Preferences. You will see the setup screen depicted here.

If you have a MAPI email client test it by clicking the "Send Test MAPI Email to Yourself".

If you need to use the eBay mail system click the button to "Send Test Email via eBay Mail System to Yourself"

If you decide to use the eBay Mail System check the box "Use eBay Mail System". If unchecked MAPI is used.

The other option is "Show Email Client Window when sending Email. If checked your email client window will appear so you can review the email before sending. Otherwise the mail is sent right away with no chance to review it. I recommend you check this box.

Click Apply to save settings.

MAPI Email

AS utitlizes Simple MAPI to send emails. Simple MAPI (Messaging Application Program Interface) is a set of API calls which allow an application to send emails.

AS works with the following email clients:

Not all email clients support Simple MAPI and therefore AS doesn't work with all email clients:

AS will not work with Microsoft Outlook because Microsoft Outlook doesn't support Simple MAPI

  • Run Outlook Express
  • On the Tools menu, click Options.
  • On the General tab, click Make Default next to This application is the default mail handler.
  • Click OK.
  • If the "Make Default" button is disabled that means that Outlook Express is already your default email client. No action necessary

    eBay Mail System

For AOL users and for those who don't have one of the supported MAPI email clients, you can use the eBay Mail System. With this system emails are sent via eBay. A copy is sent to the buyer and a duplicate copy is sent to you at whatever your registered email address is with eBay.

eBay imposes a 10 messages per 24 hour period limit on their system. Also, eBay doesn't allow any formatting of the message (it's one continuous paragraph) and limits the message body to 400 characters. This makes this option the least desirabe and I don't recommend it.

To use the eBay Mail System:

The other option is to install a MAPI email client such as Outook Express or Netscape Mail 7.xx or Netscape Messenger or Eudora or several other MAPI capable email clients and get yourself a free SMTP/POP email account.

*** As of April 2004 AOL now allows you to use an external email client to send and receive your AOL emails.

Dubbed Open Mail Access, the feature is available now for no additional charge to all AOL users running Windows or Mac OS. Instructions for configuring popular clients, including Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Entourage, and others can be reached on the AOL service by typing the keywords "open mail access."

Setup this feature so you can send MAPI emails with AuctionSage using your AOL account.
